Sheffield Wednesday EFL Cup 3rd Round 90 minutes 1 -1 Won 6 – 5 on Penalties
The EFL Cup game against Sheffield Wednesday was to be Rubén Sellés’ only game in charge (of the latest inter-regnum, anyway) so you’d have thought wholesale experimentation was probably beyond his pay grade: nine starting changes ensued, however, with a few being injury-related. Saints began promisingly, as you rather hope they would against League One […]
Newcastle Home Lost 1 – 4
Injuries have disrupted a settled team, but against Newcastle another factor came into play: blind panic. A poor performance last time out saw for Lyanco so a left footed teenager, Larios, got the right back position while veteran Walcott made a surprise start instead of Aribo, although quite where he was supposed to be playing […]

Crystal Palace Away Lost 1 – 0
I’m not sure how much people appreciate how much injuries can disrupt a squad like Southampton’s, although, of course, the Livramento situation has been known for a long time now. It seems Adams sat out most of the Arsenal game because of another injury concern and his return at Crystal Palace was the only change […]

Arsenal Home Drew 1 – 1
With what sounds like a long-term injury to Walker-Peters, allied to those of Bella-Kotchap and Livramento, and with Maitland-Niles unavailable against his parent club, Arsenal, Ralph was more or less forced to play all of Lyanco, Salisu and Caleta-Car. In response, Perraud seemed to have a more advanced role, as did Arihbo, to accommodate a […]
Bournemouth Away Won 0 – 1
Caleta-Car for the injured Bella-Kotchap was the only starting change at Bournemouth in a game put back 23 and a half hours, thus enabling locally based visiting fans to get home by public transport after comfortably the nearest thing to the real ‘derby.’ Stuff you, Amazon. Actually Amazon would have been pleased to have missed an affair […]
West Ham Home Drew 1 – 1
A turbulent week at Southampton with a backroom staffer departing in circumstances that looked odd, but no special changes on the pitch, with the manager’s faith continuing in his two Championship strikers, Adams and Adam Armstrong, in the line-up to face West Ham. There’s more fluidity in the midfield selections where the importance of the […]
Manchester City Away Lost 4 – 0
We always like to travel hopefully, don’t we? But there are some fixtures where any sort of positive result just doesn’t seem possible, and the best thing to do is enjoy the day for what it is… or just don’t go. Those who travelled to Manchester City had obviously ruled out the latter option, but […]
