Bristol City Home Drew 2 – 2

Football has a way of making us believe some intervention from its capricious gods are responsible for what logic would define as mere coincidences. Our last long unbeaten run was ended by Bristol City, so there were fears that this latest encounter would repeat history and certainly the evening didn’t begin well: Stephens was supposed to start but was withdrawn after a warm-up injury. It got worse as a long, long ball sent Burgzorg clear with Peretz thinking better of the option of coming out to challenge and it was fortunate that he could kick away the eventual shot. The reprieve was short-lived as Twine’s inviting cross managed to find the net; it looked as though Bell had the final touch but replays show him missing out only for the ball to go in off Manning‘s head with just five minutes on the clock. Manning is in good form so he didn’t allow the setback to affect his game and he was able to deliver an excellent free kick for Larin to touch in – City will be wondering why no defender tried to head the ball away. Most of our tactical moves of late have come off, but the decision to go without a wide attacker wasn’t working out, while Morsey was able to run the game for the visitors from deep. A half time change might have suggested panic so Tonda waited until the 57th minute before making his first move, bringing on both Fellows and Scienza. It didn’t have time to take effect before Bristol scored again, somehow Bell, one of the shorter players on the pitch, getting just the right contact on a corner. No messing around now as Stewart was sent on, not instead of but alongside Larin. This change was to work very nicely, with Larin holding the ball up before freeing Fellows, via Charles, for the sort of cross Stewart dreams of and the game had its third headed goal. There was plenty of time for a winner but, although City were now on the back foot, they were in determined mood in the game after a heavy home defeat and held out – despite Charles seeing a close range shot saved and Peretz venturing up for a corner in added time of added time. On the bright side, the Robins’ Curse served only to halt the run of wins.

Three LSSC Man of the Match candidates to choose from:

9. Cyle Larin. Has become one of our most popular players, with good reason.

13. Léo Scienza. On the pitch for the last third but the change of shape changed our fortunes.

18. Tom Fellows. Same description as for Scienza, plus he has an assist to his credit.
