Millwall Home Drew 0 – 0

Plenty of changes in the team selected to take on Millwall, with Fellows, Jander, Armstrong and Azaz the casualties. Scienza fitted into the Azaz role and his absence from the flank gave us a different shape, while Jelert proved to be more of a defender and less of a winger on the other side. Meaningful action around either goalmouth was in short supply, although Crocombe was seriously tested by Harwood-Bellis’ header from a corner, and when the ball came back to Scienza, he shot narrowly over the angle. The Scienza as inside left experiment ended at the break and Lćo’s game time was again limited, being replaced by Azaz in the same system. That wasn’t going well so Saints reverted to their two wing back tactic by introducing Fellows for Jelert. At least that gave the visitors a bit more to do at the back as Saints got back into the game, although Bazunu had to produce a brilliant reaction save to deny Ballo. With Armstrong already on for Archer, our normal set up was fully resumed when Robinson and Jander replaced Matsuki and Downes. Although Saints were on top for the last third of the match, seven minutes added time in a dull game seemed like cruel punishment, but Saints twice came close to a late winner: firstly, Azaz managed to get to Armstrong’s low cross and his effort would probably have scored but for Taylor sticking out a long leg to block, then, almost at the end, Harwood-Bellis couldn’t get a free header on target. A rare clean sheet ought to be a positive, but we haven’t yet turned such a thing into a League win this term.
Three LSSC Man of the Match candidates to choose from:
5. Jack Stephens, who had to rescue fellow defenders on several occasions.
32. Gavin Bazunu. His second half save ensured that shut-out, although transfer window rumours are putting his place in doubt.
48. Cameron Bragg, with a lot to be pleased about with this performance.
