London Saints Cricket Club Annual Meal 2025
A wonderful and poignant evening last Friday at our annual Cricket Meal and Awards Evening as 27 London Saints gathered at the lovely Sicily Restaurant in Victoria to hand out 7 individual trophies as we remembered 2 of our friends who we sadly lost this year and celebrated the life of others and friendship of a group of mates called The London Saints CC (Cricket Club)
Going forward there will be two Champagne Moment trophies, one for excellence and one for a cock-up. The cock-up moment was won by Reggie Betts for his watch alarm going off when he tumbled over keeping wicket in Terrence’s celebration match alerting the emergency services to his impending danger. The Champagne Moment of Excellence was deservedly won by Ben for the excellent way he organised (beforehand) and managed the whole day of his dad’s celebration match including his wonderful emotional and uplifting speech at the end.
The Ian Shiels Tourist of the Year award went to Max Cohen for his involvement in almost all aspects of the tour from playing golf and winning the quiz on the Friday to his 4 wickets in our win on Saturday and hitting our top score in our defeat on the Sunday. The Clubman of the Year Award was only ever going to go to one man this year. The way he has bravely fought against his terrible illness is an example to us all but for giving us, the club, and the London Saints family, one of, if not the best, cricketing day in our history at Burton Court in June, the trophy must go in 2025 to Terrence. .
So on the field it was another enjoyable season involving a record number of players and most importantly some new blood which was certainly needed with the semi or full retirement through age or injury of many of the older stalwarts. The number of players did though reflect the struggle we had in many games to get out a full team but by hook or by crook we did for every game. We will though have to think about maybe cutting down a few fixtures including the tour as the amount of work involved getting out teams has increased in recent years. Not though in 2026 as will have the usual full fixture list as we are only 9 games away from our 500th which we would like to celebrate in a suitable way – all ideas are welcome.
