Bristol City Away Lost 3 – 1

Jelert was withdrawn before the end of the Swansea game and it turned out that was down to injury rather than tactics, so he missed the trip to Bristol City – the only change as we persisted with the pairing of Armstrong and Archer. Actually it could be that we finally began to see what we’re trying to achieve in attack as three times in the first half we managed to get a player running clear. Twice that was Armstrong moving on to a through ball by Charles, with a poor-ish touch allowing Vitek to save the first time round before Armstrong gave his side a 30th minute lead with a neat chip that Vitek got something on, but not enough. It was more than deserved after a dominant first half hour but almost immediately Mehmeti gambled on a long forward thrust and was just about played onside by Edwards; he would probably have scored anyway, but a failed clearance by Wood made his task so much easier (of course had Wood done better, it would have stayed at 1-0). Just before the break, Armstrong sent Archer away for the third of those similar opportunities only for Vitek to save, and that was about it for our dream-team up front. We do, though, also have Scienza and for the second game running he was to hit the woodwork as Saints continued to have the most of the ball. City soon brought on their own Armstrong, a powerful forward who has given us problems before when with QPR, and here he gave Wood and Co an uncomfortable time as well as playing an inadvertent part in the crazy goal that put the Robins in front: a shot was going well wide before it hit Armstrong on the arse and rebounded onto the post; visiting defenders didn’t react at all, and neither did home attackers very much, until Twine decided that he may as well put the ball into the empty net. Twine then added a third on 64 minutes, this time profiting from Jander’s misplaced pass. Saints brought on the hapless Downs to try to save the game – well they had to do something, but how our beleaguered attack need a fluke goal of their own!

Three LSSC Man of the Match candidates to choose from:

9. Adam Armstrong who at least gave us a goal to cheer.

13. Léo Scienza. More than a handful for defenders in this league – we must find a way of taking advantage.

24. Shay Charles who will be wondering what he keeps coming back to after his notable international exploits.
