London Saints innings

On a grey overcast day, London Saints were sent into bat on a green deck. Andy “Punctual” Jones and Max Cohen were once again opening, hoping to recreate their fine partnership from the previous week. The game started after Andy finally got his pads on, and there was a steady start by the pair, reaching 19 runs off the first 5 overs. With a deep batting order it looked like a platform was being set for the bigger hitters to take on the Roadrunners attack later in the innings.

That was however as good as the Saints innings got with Trigger Finger Tony adjudging Jones to be LBW in 6th over (it was going down leg). Guy Cowley joined Cohen at the crease and hit a few nice shots before succumbing to the wily swing of R Cook. This wicket precipitated a collapse from 52-2 to 59-8 with a wicket falling 6 overs in a row. A combination of a dodgy pitch and our batter’s eyes lighting up from the slower bowling the cause of the collapse.

DT and Paul Pearce steadied the ship for several overs, showing the younger batters how to play a forward defence. Their rearguard action however did little to improve the score with DT falling with the score at 74-9. Saints finished on a measly score of 83, requiring a miracle performance in the field.

Roadrunners innings

DT and Guy made a great start to the bowling, giving us a glimmer of a hope of victory. In perhaps a London Saints record they bowled 6 maidens in a row. Guy dismissed one of their opener’s with a jaffer. We nearly had them two down in the following over from DT, however their batter refused to walk after nicking it behind to the wicketkeeper, Oscar Sykes. We thought that this was a levelling up after Jonny Mousley didn’t walk after Roadrunners believed that he had hit it.

The pressure that we had ramped upon Roadrunners with the consecutive maidens was however released when Max and Richard “Dickie” Cushion came onto bowl with both of their first overs going for 10+ runs. Both dialled in their bowling with Dickie getting a wicket from a great catch from Guy.

The game looked like it was going to have an interesting ending when we thought that Oscar had again caught one, this time off the bowling of Dickie. Again, however the umpire did not raise his finger claiming that the batter was nowhere the ball, despite a clear noise. After some verbals from some of the Saints this umpire stormed off in a huff (he did however later apologise for walking off).

To rub salt into our wounds, the very next ball was hit for six over Dickie’s head and after that it was a comfortable chase for Roadrunners.

MOTM– Guy Cowley

A very tight bowling performance from Guy, giving few scoring opportunities for Roadrunners to score as well as delivering some unplayable balls. He also took a tricky catchy and got the second top score batting.

Terrence Collis Excellence Champagne Moment –

Richard Griffiths came in at No 11 and sent a message to the skipper that he should be batting higher up the order by whacking a couple of fours.

Cock up Champagne Moment

Ben Sherriff and Ed Price were asked to move the sightscreen for the batter, but in a Chuckle Brothers moment they both started pushing the sightscreen in the opposite direction meaning the screen went nowhere (you had to be there).
