Wolverhampton Wanders Away Lost 2 – 0
After two home wins most fans felt a bit more optimistic prior to facing the bottom club at Molineux, however that soon disappeared, firstly when Downes got injured in prematch warm up, and then when Walker Peters gave the ball way under no pressure, and Wolves broke through our exposed defence to take the lead after just 2 minutes.
Saints did fight back, and seemed to have equalised a little more than 10 minutes later through Manning, only for VAR to disallow it for a foul by Fernandes (most in the media including Mike Dean thought this was an error by VAR). The team kept battling away before the break but made few chances, but you could sense the Wolves fans were getting nervous .
But that soon changed, when 6 minutes after the break, after what appeared to be fouls on two of our players Cunha hit an unstoppable shot into top corner from outside the box, and that was effectively game over, as despite having 70% possession in the match we didn’t have a single shot on target, we just offer little goal treat as 7 goals in 11 games testifies.
It’s no good having all the possession if you don’t work the goalkeeper, even when we bought Tall Paul on we rarely hit the ball in the air towards him, even when we had a free kick in good position 10 mins from the end, we played it sideways and failed to cross it into the area ( a repeat of what we did in injury time at Man City). What is the point of having a tall striker if you don’t cross the ball to him.
Game also again showed how weak we are in midfield without Downes, although Lallana did his best.
Cannot take any positives from this game apart from hoping the likes of Wycombe, Wrexham, Stockport or Lincoln get promoted so we have a couple of enjoying days out next season in the Championship.
Man of match – Lallana did ok for an hour, Dibling and Sugawara did the same in their substitute appearances, but stand out for me was the lino (assistant referee) on our side of the ground, he actually gave proper decisions unlike the awful referee and the clowns on VAR.
