MANCHESTER CITY 6 SAINTS 5

MANCHESTER CITY 6  SAINTS 5 – Venue:  The Horseshoe, Farringdon.

Captain Nick was unsure about the shirt.  I quite liked it.  Welcome to newcomer, Tom, who can play in whatever he wants really.

The most amazing statistic about this opening darts fixture was that both sides had a full six players.  We were unfortunate in the opening team game and the first pairs where we were just about to strike for the double when City finished in quick time. From being 2-0 down, Paul and Tom pulled one back with relative ease and then Nick and Mick followed suit to make it all square.  The Nick and Mick pairs was one of those games where we were so far in front and have lost in the past, but Nick eventually slotted in x1.

In the singles, Steve was up against the best City player by a country mile.  John had chances in his singles, but we found ourselves 4-2 down.

The strength came in the middle.  Individual champion Paul saw off a good City player and debutant Tom had a very good night by winning his match.  Captain Nick toyed with his opponent before winning our fifth game of the night as we stunningly took a 5-4 lead.  Mick struggled a bit in the last singles and lost making it all square as we went into the last team game and the beer leg.

City were more thirsty than us as they stormed into a convincing lead, but Saints caught them up and we had a shot at winning the match.  But it was not to be as we just failed to get over the line.

All in all this was a promising start despite the defeat.  Paul was once again banging in the 100+ scores and newcomer Tom is a definite asset.  In the singles only Steve had a genuine excuse for losing, playing a player that would not be embarrassed in Division 1.

If we can get a full team every time we are going to surprise a few teams this season.  Maybe the Cup has our name on it!
