London Saints

Hammond delivers

Colchester 0, Saints 2
Fortune had not smiled on Saints at Walsall, but they did get a slice of luck in their next outing – away to Colchester. It came on the half hour when Wordsworth tried to get on the end of a loose ball despite the close attentions of Davis and Butterfield. Davis managed to get control, but rather than pick the ball up, he tried to take a touch with his feet, allowing Wordsworth a second chance. As it happens the forward fell after colliding with both Saints men, and nearby U’s colleague Mooney decided to push Butterfield in the back. It was a bit more than a friendly shove, but nothing serious… not until referee Gibbs produced a red card, after taking the authority line about raised hands a bit too literally.
Saints had already weathered Colchester’s ‘in-your-face’ start and had just taken the lead somewhat against the run of play when Lambert’s free kick fell obligingly out of the wall for Chamberlain to score.
Lallana all but headed Saints further ahead as the half closed in a flurry of action, but Williams saved spectacularly. There was nothing the keeper could do about Saints’ second just after the break, as Hammond took advantage of the extra room available in the box after a corner, and was able to control the ball before slotting home.
Had Heath been able to head Colchester back into the game midway through the half, rather than being caught offside, things could have turned awkward. As it was, the eleven men finished on top and missed a few half chances to increase their lead before the end.
