Thomas cracker highlights an excellent win

Saints 2, Ipswich 1
Notable changes for Ipswich’s visit in the F.A. Cup included a return for Jaidi and a debut for Lee Barnard who is now a Saint. A big ask for the striker, who no doubt has many qualities, but they weren’t all that obvious on this occasion.
Instead the unlikely figure of Wayne Thomas provided the striking power with a totally unexpected shot from distance that flew into the net on 31 minutes.
That provoked a reaction from sluggish Ipswich, and they began to show why they play a league higher than Saint; of course they may have woken up before the interval anyway as Roy Keane’s half time talk got closer.
The visitors had the ball in the net soon after the break but the effort was disallowed, very likely because the source was a long throw and the ball may have gone straight into the goal despite the best efforts of forwards, defenders and goalkeeper to get a piece of it. I’d like to disallow all goals scored from long throws as a matter of course, but Saints were soon able to contribute a few of their own when Antonio replaced Barnard. In fact the throw in incident was the point from which Saints decisively got on top and it was no surprise when they scored a second, tapped in by Antonio after Lee-Barrett made a bit of a mess of saving another powerful Lambert free kick.
Lambert might have added in third in the closing stages, but an outrageous effort from something around 35 yards went just over. Instead Counago put Ipswich back in with a shout just as a surprising 5 minutes of added time were announced. Saints held on, though, for their first win against opposition from a higher division sinceā€¦ well you work it out and see if you come to the same conclusion as me. Wonder when the next occasion will be?!
LSSC Man of the Match: Wayne Thomas. Both Thomas and Mills have done well since being pressed into service at full back for the last couple of games, but only Thomas has scored a wonder goal.
