REPORT FROM JUNE 4, 2006
London Saints pool team clinched the APFSCIL title on Wednesday evening with a home victory versus West Brom. We went into the match not knowing the result of the previous evenings double header between Derby and Sunderland. Derby needed to win both matches against the league's bottom side 9 -0 to leave us needing one point the claim the title.
Up stepped Captain Fantastic Reg to win the first frame and make the Championship safe. So now they thought, let's put on a show and win this in style - well in typical Saints style, 30 minutes later we were 2-1 down!
But it did not need an inspirational team talk or rollocking from the Captain or his able assistant Gav. All it needed was to hear the sarcastic chants coming from a very disrespectful West Brom team - Championise Championise - If Saints can the league so can I and so on. Well the lads responded in fine style and 2 hours later we run out worthy 7-2 winners.
It certainly went quiet over there but not in the Saints camp - Champagne flowing, (thanks to Tom the governor at the Royal Star for donating a bottle) singing bellowed out and a great night was celebrated in true London Saints style - but was regretted the next day at work!
As it turned out the one frame was not necessary in the end as Derby only beat Sunderland 5-4 and 7-2 so we ended up winning the league by a massive 15 points.
Well done to the squad – Captain Reggie Betts, Vice Captain Gavin (Not So) Blake, Billy (Billy Idle) Bower, Dave (postie) Mason, Colin(the yid) Riley, Garry (Phsyco) Burrell, Lester (the Sausage) Pitts and 2 lads we lost towards the end of the season, Andy Mayhew now in Japan and Gavin Wingfield over in Australia.
It is the 2nd time in recent years we have won the Pool Championship and only the 3rd time in our 28 year history that a London Saints side has won the top division in all the sports we participate in.
