Plymouth 9 Saints 2
The late withdrawal of Saints' darts ace Martyn Brockwell due to a calf strain (sorry, I misheard - missed train) meant Saints were looking down the barrel in facing a Plymouth team still smarting from relegation last season.
Down to four players, spirits picked up when one of the Plymouth brethren also cried off, leaving it four a side. It meant both teams forfeited a singles match, so the game kicked off at 1-1. Sadly, it didn't get much better.
The team game was lost on the double (x1, as usual) although skipper Nick and out-of-retirement Steve pinched a doubles match to make it 2-2. The other pairing of Keith and John were shaded out.... then we lost all four singles and the double points team game at the end.
Still, no disgrace to a strong and affable Plymouth bunch, who did include an excellent player who scored a conservative six tons during the evening. We lost count.
And, after a marathon first team game which took 30 minutes, proceedings were over by 9.45pm, leaving time for another fne pint of Youngs at the host pub, the City Retreat in Shoe Lane.
The result means London Saints have won one and lost one in the Apfscil 3rd division. The plea for anyone who fancies a game to turn out continues - contact Nick Head (details on home page)
