Saints crash to the Toon
Tuesday, May 22, 2007
Suffering from post non promotion blues, the darts team crashed 9-2 to league leaders Newcastle last night. Despite late work related withdrawals from captain Nick Head and Martyn Brockwell, this did not dent the confidence of the London Saints, knowing that with only four players we had to concede matches anyway.
Newcastle are unbeaten this season after coming down from Division 2 last year and are by far the best team we have met (I had to say that in light of the defeat, but true!). We had our chances to have made the defeat closer! Keith and John were defeated in the first pairs, but Colin and Mick followed up to make it 1-1.
It was to be the last time we were on level terms. Keith had to play his pairs game against two Newcastle and valiantly went down. In the singles Colin played the best Newcastle player and in a good match both players had chances to finish, but unfortunately Newcastle prevailed.
John was behind in his singles and caught up to get on a double but eventually lost. Stand in captain Mick revived fortunes in a high scoring game by getting double 18 at the first attempt. Newcomer Keith lost his singles, but showed promise - well in this league anyway!
Despite being up against it with a man short in both team games we plugged away and with a bit more luck we would have rattled Newcastle's cages, but defeat in the team games left us with a 9-2 defeat. Generously we still played the last team game as the beer leg which we supped with Newcastle post match as banter ensued as to how good Sunderland are and their great chances of making the Champions League!
Brown Ale moments: Mick scored 3 (in 3 darts) which set a trend as the Newcastle chap followed up with 3 also! Highlight of the evening was when the darts was interrupted when a stranger in the pub tried to steal the jacket of one of the Newcastle playes. The room was completly silent as the Newcastle chap challenged the stranger and for one moment, if not two moments, we all thought the Newcastle chap was going to 'do him in!'
Common sense prevailed and the chap was asked to leave the pub and the darts resumed. In the spirit of drinking we joined Newcastle downstairs missing a tube train or two. We all felt the jacket of the Newcastle chap as we left, but he would not part with it!
This puts us as Played 7 Won 3 Lost 4 with one game left and looking as if we will remain in Division 3 unless we have a massive win against Blackpool.
