Brocky offers DT his years (and years) of experience!
I take it that Dave will correctly assess his situation and choices before making any decision?
As one who has helped develop a youth system at my own cricket club, it isn't just a case of turning up and running things!
How many of DT's past activities may cause him grief in getting the required CRB clearance to work with children? Dealing with certain members of the LSSC CC doesn't count!
Has he the commitment to work his way through the required ECB coaching levels and achieve appropriate qualifications that would be wasted on his present charges?
I wish him well in whatever the future holds for his cricketing aspirations and will be happy to offer more advice if he so requires.
Trev believes that this is a pitiful plea for affection and gratitude from the skipper (as per his annual threat of resignation following the ex-Blues game).
Just in case it is just a pitiful plea from an affection starved dictator, I would like to put forward the following points:
* We are really really grateful for all the hard work DT does in running the team. I know we take him for granted sometimes, and some of the lads can be quite cruel with some of their comments, but please don't leave us. Perhaps a couple of team counselling sessions would help?
To help persuade DT to stay, I will petition the lads to adhere to the following rules:
* We will promise to turn up on time (with the exception of Jonesy - you can't fight nature and senility)
* We promise to look really worried when DT threatens not to pick players if they do not go to nets, even though everyone knows he only has 7 players available.
* We promise not to mention the following:
- hair dyeing
- his corset
- no balls
- leg side full tosses
- his inability to play spin bowling
* We also promise never to put that unflattering picture of him letting the ball through his legs on the internet again.
If it is a serious threat, then we need to remind DT of the following:
* It will be at least 5 years before he can go with his under 10 team to the pub for a few beers, and lord alone knows how long before they'll be touring the West Country.
* You have a certain responsibility here - you have a large squad of elderly players all reliant on you for a game of cricket, we all know that this could spell the end to a large number of cricketing careers, as no-one else is going to give most of us a game. And even if they give us a game, because they are short, we won't get a bat or bowl and will have to field at fine leg at both ends (what a waste of some exceptional slip talent).
* You may get the enjoyment and pride of watching an under 10 develop into a top class batsman/bowler/all rounder , but can that compare to the pride you feel following one of your masterful skippering decisions : I will remind you of how proud you were following Psychos successful move up the batting order a couple of seasons ago.
* A bunch of kids are not going to know what you are talking about when you ask them to go to various fielding positions, it could all become most embarrassing.
Do we have anyone else willing to take on some/all of the responsibility of running the team? If not, then clearly we need to get into major grovel mode; if we have, then perhaps it will be nice having the team run by someone who is not a power crazed dictator (remembering his running of the footie team though, if it's Pete, we'll notice little difference).
If the possibility does start to look more likely, then some more sincere comments and thanks can be expressed. Is there a compromise with us playing fewer games in the season?
