Cricket: the season starts here

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

Eight hardy London Saints met up at Paddington Rec ground last night for the first nets session of the new season. Well, seven actually - plus potential new signing Gavin van Marle on a free signing from a long defunct team called ET.

It was the first of four Tuesday night nets (from 6pm-8pm) and saw the return from an injury (again) for Kumar, who is shortly off to Sri Lanka and will check progress on LSSC's cricket facility and fishing boat for tsunami victims.

Inevitably, there were new injuries however with Paul "Mildred" Pearce being hit on the back while attempting to avoid a lashing off the bat from Little John. It was Paul's ball thaat got lashed however. Then The Van pulled a shoulder muscle, doing his chances of signing up with a bunch of middle-aged injury-prone blokes no harm at all.

The skipper, DT, saw his wickets clatter on two occasions to The Van, while both Steve Keenan and Tony "Youth Policy" Grimes weighed in with a clatter. Gary Burrell spent time at the crease with DT looking to promote him up the batting order, partly because of Pyscho's performance in Sri Lanka and partly because we have too many bowlers.

All in all, a good workout, with a customary pint afterwards, where both Paul Pearce and Tony Grimes received their Tour shirts amid much applause and celebration.

If you want to take part next week, turn up at Paddington and/or contact Dave Thomas - details on the Members section.
