Southampton have responded with a ‘hands-off’ warning after George Burley was linked with a switch to Charlton. The Addicks were reported to have targeted Burley as a replacement for the outgoing Alan Curbishley, but Rupert Lowe says: “We have had no contact at all from Charlton and George is not going anywhere. He is putting down roots here, he has assembled a coaching staff and is building for next season’s promotion push.”
Burley also dismissed the speculation. “Ihave not heard anything and I am happy and enjoying life here. I have had great support from the fans and the chairman since I came to the club. Good things are happening and I am very
confident we can be pushing for a place in the top six next season.”
Burley has continued his preparations for next term by releasing defenders Darren Kenton and Jim Brennan, who follow striker Marian Pahars through the exit door. Matt Oakley has been offered a one-year contract and fellow midfielder Djamel Belmadi is expected to agree a new deal.
