The central midfielder was judged a success in his time at St Mary's in the last few months of last season whilst on loan from Liverpool and George Burley recently said he was keen to try and tempt Guthrie back to Saints without making clear as to whether this would be as a loan or permanent transfer.
New Bolton boss Sammy Lee, with obvious Anfield connections, has stepped in and offered the player Premiership experience.
