Saints 1 Ipswich 0

Saturday, February 24, 2007

In the first minute against Ipswich, Saganowski was unmarked but still rose well to glance home Bale's free kick. That's all you need to know about a distinctly nondescript match. Plenty of time for fans to discuss where we are going wrong following that morale-sapping defeat at Coventry, and for large shareholders to look around the directors' box to see who was most likely to stab them in the back.

The two thoughts may be related, as Southampton's spending in the summer transfer window had left them with nothing to speculate with in January. Did we agree to signing aging and probably high wage players in the belief that new investment would finance more purchases for the final push when requirements became better known?

Personally I never took expectations of new money that seriously but I agree the observation by a drinking partner that we should really have got the goalkeeper/centre-back/central-midfield/main-striker axis sorted out: as it is we give away too many sloppy goals. Meanwhile back on the pitch, Ipswich seldom threatened to expose our back line as they had when similarly outplayed at Portman Road. Jones created but also missed our best chances, including a shot against the post.

Man of the Match: Jhon Viafara, but Saints didn't really have to break sweat.
