With Rasiak still injured, a potential selection dilemma about whether to retain a successful midweek partnership or recall the leading scorer was solved. As the latest visitors were lowly Hull, it shouldn't have mattered much anyway - but by going home time, Saints had drawn another blank and fans were suggesting McGoldrick could have got nearer the pitch than the bench.
I'm not so sure. McGoldrick has scored a hatful of goals, but in successful age-group teams, and he has always given me the impression of benefiting hugely from the endeavours of others. With the service Wright-Phillips and Jones were given, even the likes of Channon or Shearer would have struggled to get on the scoresheet.
Of course they were exceptional players, and would have made something happen for themselves, but it is not the fault of our present strike force that they are not world class. If they fire blanks, it's because no-one is supplying the live bullets. Saints did change their formation a bit, with Wright playing the holding role and Idiakez moving further forward.
However, the Spaniard failed to provide, other than via a free kick which came back off the bar, and the two Czechs weren't any better. Another let down.
Man of the Match: Claus Lundekvam, but the defence had a very easy afternoon. Trouble is, so did Hull's.
