Millwall 0, Saints 4

Millwall 0, Saints 4

Tuesday, September 19, 2006

With a 46 game league schedule and hardly any reserve games to speak of, it must be wise to use the Carling Cup to rest regulars and give opportunities to those who may otherwise be forgotten. So in came Ostlund, Bale, Belmadi, Sarmiento, Surman and Wright-Phillips for the visit to Millwall. Baird and Pele played, however, and were given some embarrassing moments by big Danish centre forward Hubertz.

The home side are struggling badly, and Jones had hit the post early on before Wright-Phillips span to make space for a cross that Belmadi converted. BWP banged in a second that was disallowed for offside against Jones, who was then stopped in his tracks by offside against Wright-Phillips. The pair got it right just before the break when Jones headed down for Wright-Phillips to score. Saints took a relaxed approach to the second half and it wasn't until vary late in the game that substitute Licka threaded a fine pass to Wright-Phillips for a MotM winning second.

There was still time for Surman to get round the back and set up McGoldrick for a easy first senior goal and our biggest away win since 2001. We even had a champagne moment. Sarmiento, having sprayed a couple of good passes around, took a siesta-style time out to reflect on his good work. Presumably in Argentina they knew better than to return a pass to him when he was day-dreaming around with his back to the play.

Man of the Match: Bradley Wright-Phillips. In fact for an overall contribution, not just the goal.
