Brighton Away Carabao Cup Round 2 Won 0 – 1

The opening rounds of the League Cup, EFL Cup, Carabao Cup or whatever you want to call it have long been a farce, and Brighton and Southampton’s selections for round two’s only all Premier League tie did nothing to make them more serious: only Elyounoussi and Albion’s Bissouma started in both the cup game and their most recent league match. Saints seemed to have more experience in their squad and began promisingly with Elyounoussi forcing a save from Button and Yoshida seeing his follow up kicked off the line, but generally this was a drab encounter littered with misplaced passes. It was particularly disappointing that Elyounoussi and Armstrong failed to impress on an occasion where a strong performance was the best way to secure a place in the proper first XI; maybe I’m being harsh on our team, though, as even BHA’s highlights package fails to show any action from their side in the first half. After the break Gunn had to save well from Gyokere’s header but the game had to wait to be enlivened by the Southampton substitutes Gallagher (70 mins) and Austin & Redmond (81 mins). The first opportunity fell to Austin after goalkeeper Button miskicked in front of Gallagher, but the striker’s shot was cleared, then finally on 87 minutes the deadlock was broken when Austin headed home Redmond’s cross to spare us the agonies of penalties as this half-baked competition has done away with extra time.

LSSC Man of the Match: Maya Yoshida. A shame those in front of him found it so difficult to pass to one another.
