Saints Subjected to Darts Thrashing

Like Arsenal, our cup chances have gone for another year with a 7-2 defeat by a very good Coventry team. Coventry used to play in Division 1, but can only get a Cup team out these days. We do not play them very often, but there were a couple of faces we recognised, notably Pete, who I remembered was a top class player. He still is, as he banged in a maximum 180 in the pairs game. Just to give you an idea of how good Pete is, he has won the APFSCIL title eleven times and been in three other finals.

Playing the pairs first (club fines for the two players who were late!), Steve Keenan and Steve Grant were wondering how they were still in the match after Pete’s 180. Defeat came though as Coventry’s No.2 was not bad either. In the second pairs John Smith and Mick Strickland were light years behind, caught up to have a chance at the double, but lost. John Griffiths and Steve Cole also went down and after the team game we found ourselves 4-0 adrift.

Steve C. was up for a challenge with Coventry Pete and he raised him game (had to!), but all in vain. Step up Steve K. who held his nerve to keep us in the game at 5-1. Steve G. lost and then we played on for another two singles. John G. had chances, but to no avail and Mick won the other singles for our second point.

Some of Coventry and one of us had gone home by now, so we called it a day after nine games. At least we saved money on the beer leg.

The overall problem for us was that we did not score highly enough to give ourselves a real chance.
